Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting,
involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are
added. The liquid/paste is then applied to a surface—usually prepared wood,
though canvas and other materials are often used. The simplest encaustic mixture can be made
from adding pigments to beeswax, but there are several other recipes that can
be used — some containing other types of waxes, damar resin, linseed oil, or other ingredients. Pure, powdered pigments can be purchased and
used, though some mixtures use oil paints or other forms of pigment. Metal tools and special brushes
can be used to shape the paint before it cools, or heated metal tools can be
used to manipulate the wax once it has cooled onto the surface. Today, tools
such as heat lamps, heat guns, and other methods of applying heat allow artists
to extend the amount of time they have to work with the material. Because wax
is used as the pigment binder, encaustics can be sculpted as well as painted.
Other materials can be encased or collaged into the surface, or layered, using the encaustic
medium to adhere it to the surface.

What is a Pysanka?

A Pysanka is an embellished chicken, duck or goose egg. The plural of Pysanka is Pysanky and is derived from the Ukrainian verb, “Pysaty”, which means, “to write.” Melted beeswax is applied to the clean egg shell using a
writing implement called a “kistka” or stylus. The egg is then dipped in a dye bath.  Once the density of color is
achieved the egg is removed and the wax is melted off by holding it close to a candle flame.  The markings in wax resist the dye and the “writing” is revealed.
Of course a PYSANKA adorned with many colors has been dipped in many dye baths with wax writing between each bath. The egg is emptied of its contents through two small holes on either end and sealed with a gloss. The patterns on the traditional eggs are considered to be “written” and not applied.  Each color or symbol represents an attribute or wish for the person receiving the egg.  For example, the diamond shape means knowledge and the fish shape means Christianity.  An egg with these patterns would be an ideal gift for a Sunday school teacher.  The bird symbol means “fulfillment of wishes” or “fertility”. If the bird were a rooster, the egg would make a great gift for a man as the rooster symbolizes masculinity.
